IN THE UM AT THE BED
The bed – a place of rest, relaxation, and intimacy. For many, it's a place of retreat; for others – especially in care – it becomes the center of everyday life. It's where care is taken, where people talk, where silence is shared, where touch is shared, and where they connect. The bed is not just a piece of furniture, but a living space.
The exhibition "IM UM AM BETT" at the Stapferhaus in Lenzburg , organized by the Health Design Minor at ZHdK together with the Institute for Design Research and the Digital Health Design Living Lab , puts this space in the spotlight. From April 6 to 21, 2025, it invites visitors to reconsider the bed from design, care, and social perspectives.
At the conference on April 5, designers, students, and experts from the healthcare sector came together to discuss the importance of the bed in the interplay of care, body, and design. What makes a good bed? What role do materials, colors, and shapes play—especially when life becomes quieter?
As designers of care products, we at finally address precisely these questions. We believe that care should be visible and tangible – and that good design also has a place where it is often forgotten: in everyday caregiving. A carefully selected textile, a soft color, a well-thought-out shape – all of these create connection and dignity.
The exhibition "IM UM AM BETT" demonstrates that the bed is much more than a place to lie down. It reflects our attitudes toward care, design, and humanity itself.
