Brandy Butler & finally.
On April 5, 2025 , MITOSIS – an LSD Opera by Brandy Butler – premiered at Gessnerallee Zurich. A musical theater piece that focuses on death, the fear of it, and the power of caring. We at finally. were privileged to be part of this special evening: Our products were worn on stage – as a symbol of visibility, vulnerability, and self-care.
Brandy Butler, musician, director, and activist, has created MITOSIS , a work that combines personal experience, scientific research, and artistic expression. Inspired by current studies on the use of LSD in palliative care, the piece tells the story of a woman whose life is shattered by a cancer diagnosis. In despair, she turns to psychedelic therapy to cope with her fear of death. The piece critiques the medical reduction of humanity and presents alternative paths to healing and saying goodbye.
The production is a transdisciplinary project that interweaves music, video, dance, and text. Participants such as Annie Goodchild, Ivy Monteiro, and David Attenberger bring a diversity of perspectives and forms of expression to the stage. The music, composed by Brandy Butler, Annie Goodchild, and Ramón Oliveras, oscillates between opera, pop, and experimental sounds. The visual elements, designed by Juan Ferrari, and the stage design by Bettina Kirmair create an immersive atmosphere that deeply touches the audience.
Our collaboration with Brandy Butler and her team was more than just an artistic collaboration for us. It was a shared exploration of issues that are close to our hearts: care work, the visibility of family members, and the importance of self-care. Seeing our products on stage, embedded in a story about love, loss, and hope, was a moving moment.
We thank Brandy Butler and the entire ensemble for their trust and the opportunity to be part of this extraordinary project. MITOSIS – an LSD Opera demonstrates how art can create spaces in which care, community, and radical tenderness can be experienced.
